This directory contains MPEG information, software, and movies. You should start with the most recent FAQ which is mpeg30faq.txt. The Berkeley MPEG1 video encoder and decoder software are also here (see README-decoder and README-encoder for details). Our last estimate was that approximately 10,000 copies of the decoder have been FTP'd since the first release in November 1991. Almost 2,000 copies of the encoder have been FTP'd since it was released in July 1993. Finally, we maintain a collection of MPEG movies on-line in the directory movies. Most of the movies are short, silent videos. Some are I-frame only encodings and others are full MPEG encodings. An average of 7,500 movies per month have been FTP'd since we began keeping statistics in June 1993. You might also want to look at papers describing our work in ../papers. In particular, the file ../papers/research.txt is an overview of our research program and ../papers/Mpeg93.ps.Z and ../papers/MM93Talk.ps.Z are the paper and presentation slides, respectively, on our decoder given at ACM Multimedia '93 in Anaheim, CA.
